Emergency Commercial Refrigeration Repair in Metro Detroit

Samco Facilities Maintenance provides emergency commercial refrigeration repair across Metro Detroit, with EPA 608 certified technicians dispatched from Livonia to Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties. Walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins, display cases, ice machines, and industrial cold rooms. Existing Samco customers reach live dispatch 24 hours a day; new customers reach us 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, and get a response window on the call. Service vans carry the compressors, fan motors, gaskets, and controls that finish most repairs on the first visit.

Refrigeration down right now? Call (734) 838-6300. Tell dispatch what the equipment is, what it is doing, and whether there is product inside. That is enough to get a technician moving. Want after-hours coverage in place before the next failure? A service agreement is how a facility becomes a 24 hour customer.

What Counts as a Commercial Refrigeration Emergency

If product is at risk or a code threshold is about to be crossed, it is an emergency. The calls we run most often:

  • A walk-in cooler or freezer that is warming with product inside.
  • Ice built up on an evaporator coil so the box cannot hold temperature (defrost failure).
  • A grocery or convenience store display case reading above 41 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • An ice machine that has stopped producing before a service or event.
  • A compressor that will not start, trips its overload, or is making hard-start or rattling noises.
  • A refrigerant leak, including any hissing at the condensing unit or a chemical smell in a cold room.
  • An industrial cold room, blast chiller, or rack system drifting out of its logged range.

Michigan food code requires cold food to be held at 41 degrees or below, so a walk-in creeping into the 40s is a compliance problem before it is a spoilage problem. Call before it gets there.

What to Do While You Wait for the Technician

  1. Keep the door closed. Every opening dumps cold air. A full walk-in with the door shut can hold temperature for hours.
  2. Log the temperature every 30 minutes. Product level, not the air near the fans. Write down the time it crosses 41 degrees.
  3. Move the most sensitive product (raw poultry, dairy, seafood) to a working reach-in if you have space.
  4. Do not chip ice off the evaporator. A block of ice means the defrost system failed; chipping it damages the coil and does not fix the cause.
  5. Clear the outdoor condenser of leaves, snow, or boxes if it is visibly blocked. That alone brings some units back.
  6. Check the door gasket and the thermostat setpoint. A torn gasket or a controller that lost its setting after a power blip is a five-minute fix you can make yourself. Our walk-in cooler troubleshooting chart covers the rest.

What Happens When You Call

Dispatch takes the equipment type, the symptom, and whether product is at risk, and sends the nearest technician with the right van. On arrival the technician checks refrigerant pressures, the evaporator and condenser coils, the defrost cycle, and the electrical components at the condensing unit, then gives you the diagnosis and the fix before starting work.

Common parts ride on the van: compressors for the most common walk-in and reach-in sizes, fan motors, contactors, capacitors, defrost heaters and timers, door gaskets, and temperature controls. Most emergency repairs finish on the first visit. When a part has to be sourced, the technician gets the box holding temperature with a temporary measure where possible and tells you the return window before leaving. Every visit ends with a written report, which matters if a health inspector or an insurer asks what happened.

Emergency Refrigeration Service Area

We cover Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan: Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties, including Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, Ann Arbor, Troy, Southfield, Sterling Heights, Warren, Pontiac, Canton, and Novi. Facilities in the city can also read about commercial refrigeration repair in Detroit and commercial refrigeration repair in Livonia. The complete list is on our service areas page.

After the Emergency: Stop the Next One

Most emergency calls were preventable. The compressor that failed on a Friday night usually showed high discharge temperature, a slow refrigerant leak, or a fouled condenser coil months earlier. Once the equipment is running again, ask the technician what the maintenance visit would have caught. A quarterly preventive maintenance program for refrigeration costs a fraction of one emergency call plus the product it saves, and maintenance customers get priority dispatch when something does fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can you get to a refrigeration emergency in Metro Detroit?

Our trucks run out of Livonia, so most facilities in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw counties are within a short drive, and average response time across the service area is under 90 minutes. Existing customers reach dispatch 24 hours a day. New customers, call (734) 838-6300 between 7 AM and 4 PM, Monday through Friday, for a real arrival window.

Do you charge more for after-hours emergency refrigeration repair?

After-hours and holiday calls are available to existing Samco Facilities Maintenance customers and carry an emergency rate, which dispatch states before a technician is sent so there are no surprises on the invoice. Customers on a service agreement also get priority scheduling, which matters most on summer weekends when every contractor in Metro Detroit is booked.

How long can food stay safe if the walk-in stops cooling?

A full, well-insulated walk-in can hold below 41 degrees for a few hours after the refrigeration stops. Do not assume product is safe after 2 to 4 hours above 41 degrees without a temperature log. Keep the door closed, log temperatures every 30 minutes, and note the time product crosses 41 degrees so you can make a defensible call on what to discard.

Do you handle emergency repairs on freezers, ice machines, and industrial cold rooms?

Yes. Emergency calls cover walk-in freezers, reach-in freezers, ice machines, display cases, prep tables, and industrial cold rooms, blast chillers, and rack systems for food processors and distributors. The same technicians handle a restaurant reach-in and a warehouse cold room.

Is emergency refrigeration service available on weekends and holidays?

For existing Samco FM customers, yes: dispatch answers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays, and a walk-in that quits on a Saturday night is treated as an emergency, not a Monday ticket. If you are not a customer yet, call during business hours, or put a service agreement in place so the after-hours line is yours before the next failure.
